Guinea Pig Foot "Spurs"

Jess2010-07-07 12:03:21 +0000 #1
The other day, I picked up Sunny, and she had a strange looking growth on her foot. Id seen it before, and I just thought it was a woodshaving that got really stuck to her foot, so I just clipped it off... When I saw it grew back, I was a little freaked out at first because I thought it was some sort of fungus or disease- I looked it up online, and it turns out she only has foot spurs!

Does anyone elses piggie have these? They dont hurt the pigs if you trim them, and from I read, she didnt develope them because I did anything wrong.

Just thought it was kinda interesting, because I didnt really know about this before.

My guinea pig had a weird extra nail like think on his foot, I guess it's a foot spur. Is it ok to clip it off? x

Hi- I've been doing some research on foot spurs and both my piggies have them on their front feet. I've read that you just clip them off with a pair of nail clippers- just don't cut it too close to the foot pad, or it may start bleeding.

Foot spurs have not been proven to be caused by improper bedding or cage materials, just some genetic stuff.

Hope this helps you, Jess. :)

Ya, so Jess, to answer your question, my piggies have foot spurs and I just trim the excess off.
