hey guys i need some input on how to give old ferrets enriching activities. i know about the dig box but i hate using rice and they don't seem to like it either. any ideas on another substance i could use for a dig box?

during the winter i cant really do the toys in water trick cause its so cold in the basement where i live..

so any other ideas on something i could do to help them play more.

thanks guys.

For dig box media, go pick up a bag of kids sandbox sand from the hardware, or you can sterilize potting soil in the oven @ 180 degrees for 30 minutes (put in a tray no more than 4" deep), or go to U-Haul and pick up a bag of cornstarch packing peanuts.

Tubes, tubes, tubes....boxes, paper bags, you are only limited by your imagination! For the ferrets, its all about the "newness" of an item....they don't care what it is.

are you sure the sand isnt bad for them? i worry it would get stuck in their nose and eyes.

They are burrowing animals. Playing in the sand is no worse for them than it is for them to go outside and dig and snorkel in the dirt from a safety standpoint. Children's sandbox sand has been pre-sterilized to kill off fungus and bacteria. The ferrets eyes are protected by a third eyelid, called a nictitating membrane, that helps protect the eye.

Of course, its your call. If you aren't comfortable using sand, there are other things you can use.
